The film is a window into the world of a Senegalese Mandinka Jeli (Griot) and musician Ablaye Cissoko. Through the film, Ablaye acts as a storyteller and mediator. His stories are very different from the ones we normally hear in the western world.

This heart moving film in follows the story of one of the “witch children “from Kinshasa, Congo who had to flee to escape accusations at home. Taken in by a small band of street children, some of the estimated 30,000 that live on the street, he has a marginal existence.

Mr. Hawkins told me that he had been involved with poetry since his sophomore year at Notre Dame. He was fortunate to have an English Literature professor who specialized in poetry and told us that he would “make it sing in our souls.” In Mr. Hawkins, it succeeded and poetry “still sings in his soul.”

I really enjoyed previewing this well done and suspenseful film about a an eleven-year-old boy named Simon who goes on holiday with his Danish mother to Kenya, his birth country. He gets lost from his hotel and chases after his prize soccer ball.

“I’m interested in how words can play with meaning and the possibilities that lie in layering a poem that can be read for beauty, for emotional appeal, for colour and sometimes for a deeper meaning that depends on the reader. It forces me to observe how many different combinations that words can be employed in and still be beautiful.”

A writing project emerged, spearheaded by a young woman who was “raised” by a Nanny. She gathered together many stories of their lives and works at great risk to all involved. The result became the seeds of change which blossomed in unlikely areas, helping expand the perceptions of the townspeople.
