By Len Chan The Afro News Calgary: Carifest, Calgary’s Caribbean Festival took place June 5-12 and a total success for 2010. Starting with the Gospel Concert followed by the Showcase Gala at Theatre Junction, Carifest since being revived continues and upward trend of participants and those who relish their Caribbean Roots.
The Gospel Concert was held at Falconridge Full Gospel Tabernacle and the Carifest Parade was held at from Olympic Plaza ending up at Shaw Millenium Park. Blessed with an ideal Summer Day, thousands flocked to Shaw enjoying a full slate of entertainment on stage and shopping for Arts & Crafts and munching down Caribbean Goodies. On stage were T&T Organettes,Samba,Explosion Band,Infiniti,Maximum Force,Diversity Dancers,Caribees,Candice Ramsumair and Socazise with
Ayanna Lee-Rivers. www.calgarycarifest.com Out of Town performers included Shalli,Nadia Batson,Tallpree,Patch and featuring Caribbean Soca Queen Alison Hinds. The out of town performers also were at the Chinese Cultural Centre. When Hinds was on stage the Soca Fans crowded in front of the stage and Hinds showed why she is the Queen of Soca. Besides being an International Star, Hinds is also an advocate for AIDS awareness,Women’s Rights,Abused and Disadvantaged Children and takes part wheneverpossible. Hinds Music is designed to be appreciated by all from Soca to East Indian and her single hit Faluma was on the Guatemala Charts for 49 weeks.
